Becoming an Italian Citizen

Jure Sanguinis is a Latin term that translates in English to “Right of Blood” and is the principle to which Italy subscribes when it comes to determining citizenship. Through the principle of Jure Sanguinis, a person under the age of 18 automatically becomes an Italian citizen at birth if one or both parents is an Italian citizen, regardless of where that person was born. But, neither of my parents were Italian citizens. Or so I thought…

It turns out that Jure Sanguinis applies across multiple generations. So, if my grandmother was born in Italy, and was still an Italian citizen at the time my father was born in the U.S., then she would pass on Italian citizenship to my father. And he, in turn, would pass Italian citizenship to me. So, I realized I might actually have been an Italian Citizen since birth.

I joined a couple of online groups dedicated to Italian dual citizenship. After a little more research, I discovered that although I was probably considered to be a citizen under Italian Law, I couldn’t actually DO anything with it until my citizenship was recognized by the Italian Government. So, I needed to get an appointment at one of the Italian consulates in the United States and provide the necessary documents to prove that I had the legal right to citizenship by decent. And, there was an Italian consulate in Los Angles not far from where I was living in San Diego... this was going to be easy!

Until I discovered it most definitely wasn't.

As it turns out, and as you may know by now, the process of becoming a recognized Italian citizen can be a long, complicated, and confusing process, and there is no centralized hub where you can go to get all of the information you need.

Everyone’s situation is different and the requirements for being recognized as an Italian citizen vary depending on where you apply.

Since now being recognized, I have volunteered hundreds of hours helping others learn how to successfully become Italian dual citizens, and it has meant so much to me and my family — both to reconnect with, and honor, our Italian heritage. In fact, we are currently making plans to fulfill our dream to someday live in Italy full-time!

I am passionate about helping to simplifying the dual citizenship process, so everyone who qualifies can share in this amazing experience of holding Italian dual citizenship. I’ve learned the ins and outs — while putting in five years' worth of hours — so you don't have to!

Because of the learning curve involved, most people waste years not knowing where to even begin.

I'd love to chat with you if you have questions regarding whether you might qualify for Italian dual citizenship, or help you through the process if you've already started and could benefit from assistance.

I've answered some additional questions below about the dual citizenship process that I think you'll find helpful. You can also visit our Pricing & Booking page to book a free 20-minute consultation with me via Zoom, so I can see if we might be able to make your journey to Italian dual citizenship a bit less complex, and frankly, more enjoyable!

Saluti!
